How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile for More Local Customers

Your Google Business Profile is often the very first thing a potential customer sees about your business — before your website, before your social media. A fully optimized profile can meaningfully increase how often you show up in local search and how many of those views turn into calls, visits, or bookings.

Start with the basics — but don't skip them

It's easy to assume these are already right. Double-check anyway:

  • Business name matches your real-world signage exactly (no keyword-stuffing — Google penalizes this)
  • Category is set correctly, including relevant secondary categories
  • Hours are accurate, including holiday hours — nothing loses trust faster than showing up to a "closed" business Google said was open
  • Phone number and website link are current and clickable

Photos matter more than most businesses realize

Profiles with more photos get significantly more requests for directions and website clicks than those with few or none. Add exterior shots, interior shots, team photos, and product or work photos — updated regularly, not just once at setup.

Post regularly — yes, Google Business Profile has posts too

Most businesses don't know this feature exists. Posting updates, offers, or photos 1–2 times a week signals an active business to both Google's algorithm and to customers scrolling your profile.

Reviews: quantity, recency, and responses all matter

  • Ask happy customers directly — most people don't leave reviews unless asked
  • Respond to every review, good or bad — a thoughtful response to a negative review often builds more trust than five 5-star reviews with no owner engagement
  • Recency matters — a profile with reviews from three years ago looks less active than one with reviews from last month, even with the same overall rating

Use the Q&A and attributes sections

Fill out business attributes (wheelchair accessible, outdoor seating, etc.) completely — these feed directly into filtered local searches. Seed a few common questions in the Q&A section yourself so customers aren't left guessing.

Why this matters more in 2026

AI-powered search tools increasingly pull directly from Google Business Profile data — hours, reviews, photos, and posts — when answering local queries. A thin or outdated profile doesn't just rank lower, it's more likely to be skipped entirely by AI-generated answers.

If auditing and optimizing this feels like one more thing on the list, it's exactly what our Google Business Profile Optimization add-on handles — a full review and setup so your profile is actually working for you.
